How to Become a CNA in Alaska

How to Renew Your CNA Certification in Alaska
All CNA certifications must be renewed before March 31st of even-numbered years irrespective of when the certificate was issued. CNAs are mailed renewal notices 60 days prior to the expiration date. The new certificates will be issued within 90 days of the renewal expiration and will be effective through the next 24 months.
There are two types of nurse aide certifications renewals:
- A biennial certificate renewal for certificates issued on or before March 31st of the previous year. This certificate entails a $100 fee.
- A prorated certificate renewal for certificates issued on or after April 1st of the previous year. It entails a $50 fee.
Continuing education compliance criteria for nurse aide certificate renewal include:
- 24 contact hours of continuing education and 160 hours of paid work as a CNA for nurse aides that have held their certifications for more than 2 years;
- 12 contact hours of continuing education and 160 hours of paid work as a CNA for nurse aides that have had their certificates for more than a year but less than 2 years.
- No contact hours of continuing education and no monetarily compensated employment as a CNA are required for nurse aides that have held certification for less than a year.

Transferring your Out-of-State CNA Certification to Alaska
The application for Certified Nurse Aide by Endorsement applies to CNAs certified in other states that wish to transfer their CNA certificate to Alaska. Along with the application, candidates must include a cumulative fee of $279:

Reinstatement of Nurse Aide Certification in Alaska
Nurse aide certification reinstatement is different than CNA certification renewal. Reinstatement applies to a Nurse Aide Certification that has been lapsed for more than 1 year and less than 5 years.
