Florida State Requirements for CNAs
Starting a career in the healthcare field can be done through a CNA program. CNAs or Certified Nursing Assistants have responsibilities similar to Registered Nurses. They do personal care, rehabilitative exercises and feeding. Most of the CNAs will eventually become a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse, depending upon their decision of taking further studies. If you want to take CNA classes in Florida, there are numerous state-approved programs monitored by the Nurse Aide Registry. In fact, you can select any of the 355 locations around the state but you will be required to pay a certain fee close to $1,000. The fee will include expenses for the uniform, supplies, and the program itself.
As soon as you are done with the CNA program, you can now take the certification examination in order to be certified. There will be a processing fee of $25, a background screening fee of $40.50 and an examination fee of $93. Be sure to obtain a clean criminal record because the Nurse Aide Registry will make you ineligible to work as a CNA if you have been involved in a felony conviction, theft, abuse, or violent crime.
In Florida, CNAs must complete their education at a state-approved program, with 120 hours minimum amount of instruction. This includes 80 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical experience.
Those that are not New Nurse Aide Candidates may also follow alternate paths for eligibility for taking the CNA exam. They include:
- Current enrollment in state-approved nurse assistant program
- Challenger approach: You may take the exam without prior nurse assistant training
- If you have taken another nursing course within the last two years
- Lapsed certification of nurse aide
Florida CNA Exam Details
In the state of Florida, the CNA exam consists of two sections, a knowledge exam, and a clinical skills exam. The written exam is 60 questions that must be completed in 90 minutes. As a part of the clinical exam, candidates will be tested on hand washing protocol, and then a variety of other clinical skills, such as dressing, providing hand and nail care, providing catheter care, measuring and recording respiration, and other skills.
