Idaho State Requirements for CNAs
In Idaho, CNAs must undergo training at one of the CNA programs around the state. This consists of 120 hours of training, broken up into 80 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical instruction. Those that are not new, in-state nurse aide candidates may also apply to the state registry if they fall into one of the following tracks:
State Reciprocity: If a candidate is on another state’s CNA registry, they may qualify for certification in Idaho without taking the exam.
Challenger: A candidate may take the Idaho Nurse Aide Competency Examination if they have had:
- Completion of a semester of nursing school
- Completion of another Nurse Aide Training Program
- Their status on another state’s CNA registry has expired
Waiver: Those that have documented proof of being licensed as a nurse or physician from another state or country may be added to the registry without taking the CNA exam
Lapsed: Those who allowed their CNA certification to lapse over the last 24 months may be eligible to take a test without undergoing a training program.

Idaho CNA Exam Details
The exam has two sections with a 60 question written part as well as a clinical exam. The clinical exam covers up to five skills, including Hand Washing and Indirect Care. Content that is covered in the written component of the examination include Role of the Nurse Aide, Promoting Safety, Basic Nursing Care covered by the Nurse Aide, Provided Specialized Care for Residents and other nurse training concepts.
