Certified Nurse Aides are healthcare professionals that mostly work in nursing homes or long-term care facilities. Typically, a Certified Nurse Aide serves under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. To be able to work as CNA in Indiana, nurse aides must be added to the Indiana CNA Registry.
How to Become a CNA in Indiana
There are several routes that one can become a Certified Nurse Aide in Indiana:
- New CNA
To become a new CNA in Indiana, one must complete a 105-hour state-approved training program and take and pass the written and manual skills evaluations. The Ivy Tech Community College is responsible for administering the Nurse Aide competency evaluations.
- Student Nurse
An individual currently enrolled in a nursing program may become a Certified Nurse Aide if they have completed Fundamentals of Nursing, or equivalent course, with a C, or better, grade and have passed the written examination for nurse aides in Indiana.
- Graduate Nurse
A graduate RN or LPN that has not taken or did not pass NCLEX can become a certified nurse aide if they successfully pass the written and skills NATCE (Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation) exams.
- Psychiatric Attendant/Qualified Medication Aide (QMA)
A QMA can become a Certified Nurse Aide if they are current and in good standing with the QMA registry, if they have worked as QMA in the past 6 months, and if they pass the written exam of the NATCE.

Certification Renewal for Indiana Nurse Aides
The CNA registry in Indiana requires Certified Nurse Aides to renew their certification every 2 years. The certification can be renewed through regular mail or online via he Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) Online Licensing System. To be re-certified, applicants must:
- Have worked as a CNA for 8 hours in the last 24 months.
- Have received a minimum of 12 hours of in-service education and training per year
Reinstatement of a Lapsed Nurse Aide Certificate
If a CNA fails to work 8 hours as a nursing aide within 24 consecutive months, they lose their certification. To reinstate their certificate, they are required to complete 12 hours of CEC and retake the competency exam.

Out-of-state CNA Certification Transfer
A certified Nurse Aide that is current and in good standing in their home state registry may obtain certification to practice in Indiana if they complete the written exam of NATCE. However, they must pass the exam within 120 days of starting to work as a CNA in Indiana.
