The Long-Term Care Division of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) regulates the Michigan CNA Registry. While LARA approves nurse aide programs in Michigan, Prometric has been assigned to maintain the registry.

The route to becoming a new Certified Nurse Aide in Michigan comprises of two steps:

Certification Renewal for Nurse Aides in Michigan
According to the CNA registry in Michigan, nurse aides must renew their certificates every 24 months. To be eligible for certification renewal, nurse aides must submit proof of employment as a CNA for a minimum of 8 consecutive hours in the last 24-month period prior to their current expiration date. In addition, they must submit a renewal form and a renewal fee to Prometric. Typically, Prometric sends out a renewal notice/reminder 45 days prior to the current registry document expiration date. All certificates must be renewed BEFORE the expiration date on the holder’s certificate.

Reinstatement of a Lapsed Nurse Aide Certificate
If a nurse aide has not worked as a CNA for monetary compensation in the last 24 months and the certificate has lapsed, the nurse aide is required to re-take the competency exam given that they have completed a state-approved program for CNAs in the state of Michigan. To schedule for testing, nurse aides with lapsed certificates must contact Prometric.

Certification by Reciprocity
Out-of-state nurse aides can become certified in the state of Michigan by reciprocity if their certificate is current and in good standing in their home state. The conditions for application for certification by reciprocity are listed in the Michigan Public health Code under Section 333.21913.

All applicants who have trained out of state but have not become certified in their home state can take the competency exam and become certified in Michigan if their have completed a CNA program in the last two years in one of the following states:
