The NC Department of Health & Human Services is the regulating body for nurse aides. Pearson Vue is the designated agency to administer the competency exam for nurse aides in North Carolina.
Becoming a Certified Nurse Aide I in North Carolina
Becoming a nurse aide in North Carolina entails completing successfully a state-approved CNA program, which typically consists of 75 hours, including 16 hours of clinical experience. The next step is to pass the NNAAP Examination, which comprises of a Written or Oral Exam and a Skills Exam. Both the skills and knowledge exams will be taken in the same day. Once you pass both parts of the NNAAP examination, your name will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry.
Becoming a Certified Nurse Aide II in North Carolina
Nurse aides with a Nurse Aide I listing with current/active status and in good standing with the North Carolina CNA Registry must complete a NA II program approved by the NC Board of Nursing in order to become a Nurse Aide II. Nurse Aide I Listing Renewal in North Carolina
Nurse aides listed in the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry must renew their listing every 24 months to remain eligible for employment as nurse aides. scannable listing renewal form is mailed to each nurse aide on the registry approximately 60 days prior to the listing expiration date.
Nurse aides who wish to renew their registry listing must prove that they have provided 8 hours’ worth of nursing related services for pay and under the supervision of a RN, in the last 24-month listing period.
Listing Reinstatement
Nurse aides listed in the NC registry fails to meet the eligibility criteria for renewal based on employment are required to retake classes and take a new competency examination in order to reactivate their listing with the registry.
Out-of-state CNA Certification Transfer
Unlike most states, the CNA registry in North Carolina does not place out-of-state nurse aides on the registry based on endorsement, transfer, or reciprocity. However, candidates may either complete state-approved Nurse Aide I classes OR take and pass the NC nurse aide examination administered by Credentia.
