The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has designated the Division of Health Facilities of the North Dakota Department of Health as the agency responsible for the registration of CNAs, maintaining the registry, as well as receiving and investigating allegations of abuse in long term care facilities.

Initial CNA Certification in North Dakota
For an individual to be eligible to work as a CNA in a nursing facility, the state of North Dakota requires that the respective individual complete successfully a department-approved CNA training program and competency evaluation. Or, the respective individual can choose to take and pass a department-approved competency evaluation. All CNA applications for North Dakota are now accepted electronically. Paper applications are no longer accepted.
Certification Renewal for North Dakota CNAs
Every 24 months, nurse aides must renew their certificates in order to maintain a current status on the North Dakota CNA Registry. Nurse aides must complete a nurse aide renewal application and provide verification of employment. Eligible employment is considered a minimum of 8 hours of paid CNA work within the past 24 months of certification. Once all documents are received, the registry status of the CNA is updated.

Reinstatement of Expired CNA Certificate in North Dakota
Nurse aides who are not eligible for certification renewal based on employment must pursue the initial certification route in order to update their registry status to current, i.e. complete successfully a department-approved CNA training program and competency evaluation. Or, the respective individual can choose to take and pass a department-approved competency evaluation.

CNA Certification Transfer by Endorsement to North Dakota
Out of state CNAs who are in good standing and active on the registry of another state’s registry can apply for certification by endorsement in North Dakota. An endorsement form must be completed and, if all eligibility requirements are met, the individual will be granted reciprocity and added to the CNA Registry in North Dakota.
