1. Meet Basic Requirements

Before starting your path to becoming a CNA in Utah, it’s important to know the basic eligibility requirements. Here’s what you need to qualify:

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 16 years old to enroll in a CNA training program in Utah. Some training programs or employers may prefer candidates who are 18 or older, but the state allows younger students to start their education as long as they meet other prerequisites.
  • Background Check: You will need to pass a criminal background check. Utah requires all CNA candidates to undergo this screening, as it ensures the safety of patients and complies with healthcare facility regulations. This process includes submitting fingerprints to the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL).
  • Education: Utah does not require a high school diploma or GED to become a CNA, but some training programs may have specific educational requirements. It’s important to check with the CNA program you plan to attend.
  • Health Requirements: You may need to provide proof of certain vaccinations and complete a physical exam before participating in clinical training. Most programs will require an up-to-date TB test to ensure you’re in good health before working directly with patients.
  • Certification Application Fee: To apply for certification in Utah, there is a $20 application fee. Be prepared to submit this payment as part of your application process after completing your training and exam.

2. Attend a School

After ensuring you meet the basic requirements, the next step is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training program. Utah requires that CNA candidates complete specific training to be eligible for certification. The programs are designed to teach you the essential skills needed to work as a CNA in various healthcare settings.

Training Program Requirements:

  • Minimum Training Hours: Utah mandates that CNA training programs consist of 100 total hours of instruction. This includes:
  • 76 hours of classroom and laboratory training, where you’ll learn key CNA skills and theoretical knowledge.
  • 24 hours of supervised practical training in a long-term care facility. This hands-on experience is critical as it allows you to apply the skills you’ve learned in real patient care scenarios.
  • Curriculum Overview:
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for CNAs, including:
  • Basic nursing skills (e.g., taking vital signs, caring for the patient environment)
  • Personal care skills (e.g., assisting with bathing, dressing, and eating)
  • Infection control and safety procedures
  • Resident rights and ethics
  • Mental health and social service skills
  • Rehabilitation and restorative care techniques

Considerations When Choosing a CNA Program:

  • Cost of the Program: The cost of CNA programs in Utah varies by provider, typically ranging from $400 to $1,500. Be sure to explore any financial assistance or scholarship opportunities that might be available. Long-term care facilities that are Medicare and Medicaid certified may offer reimbursement for training and testing if you agree to work for them after obtaining your certification.
  • Location and Schedule: Consider the program’s location and whether its schedule fits with your other commitments, such as work or family responsibilities. Some schools offer flexible scheduling options, including evening or weekend classes.

3. Pass the CNA Exam

After completing your CNA training, the next step is to pass the Utah CNA certification exam. This exam, administered by the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry, consists of two parts: a written test and a skills evaluation.

Written Exam:

  • The written portion of the exam includes 75 multiple-choice questions covering various CNA duties and responsibilities, including infection control, patient care, safety, and legal issues. You’ll have two hours to complete this section.
  • If English is not your first language, you may request to take the oral version of the exam, which includes a listening comprehension section.

Skills Evaluation:

  • The skills evaluation requires you to perform five CNA skills in front of an evaluator. The skills are selected randomly from a set list, and they may include tasks such as:
  • Taking vital signs
  • Assisting a patient with ambulation
  • Providing oral hygiene
  • Performing range of motion exercises
  • One of the required skills will always be hand hygiene, while the other four will vary. You’ll have 30 minutes to complete all five tasks.

Exam Fees:

Exam Type Cost
Written Exam Only $40
Skills Evaluation Only $75
Both Written and Skills Exam $115

You’ll have up to three attempts to pass both parts of the exam. If you fail either portion three times, you’ll need to retake the CNA training program before trying again.

4. Certification Registration and Upkeep

Once you’ve passed both parts of the CNA exam, you’ll need to register with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry to officially become a licensed CNA in the state.

How to Register as a CNA in Utah:

  • After passing the exam, you’ll submit your certification application to the Utah Nurse Aide Registry, along with any required documentation and the $20 registration fee.
  • Once approved, your name will be added to the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry, and you’ll be eligible to work as a CNA in healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.

Maintaining Your CNA Certification:

In Utah, CNA certifications must be renewed every two years. To keep your certification active, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Work Requirement: You must have worked at least 200 hours (about 25 days) as a CNA under the supervision of a licensed nurse during the previous two years.
  • Renewal Application: Renewal forms will be available in your TMU account 90 days before your certification expiration date. You’ll need to submit a renewal form signed by a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or Human Resources representative.

Lapsed Certification:

  • If your certification expires, you may still be able to renew it as long as it’s been less than two years since it lapsed. However, if more than two years have passed, you will need to retake both the CNA training program and the certification exam to regain your status.
