Virginia State Requirements for CNAs

In Virginia, as of May 2023, the state has a minimum education requirement of 140 total hours and clinical training must be at least 40 hours. CNA classes must provide at least 24 hours of instruction before an applicant can work with a client. Additionally, students may apply for the exam if they are currently enrolled in a nursing education program, are a nursing graduate preparing for a licensure program, or a lapsed certification holder, as long as they meet the guidelines outlined here.

Virginia CNA Exam Details

The Written portion of the exam is 70 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 2 hours to complete these 70 questions. The Skills Evaluation mimics a real working environment. Candidates must demonstrate skills with actor clients. 5 randomly selected Nursing Assistant skills will be tested, with hand washing always being one of the skills tested. A candidate volunteer will be present for the test taker to use as an example patient.
