In Virginia, nurse aides’ certifications and standards are regulated by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Credentia has been designated to administer the certification examination.
Initial Nurse Aide Certification in Virginia
According to the standards of the Virginia CNA registry, certification as a nursing assistant in the state of Virginia consists of the following steps:
- Enrolling and completing a 120-hour, state-approved CNA program
- Taking and passing the CNA certification exam with Pearson Vue
Pearson Vue is responsible for sending your certification exam results to the Virginia Board of Nursing. if you have obtained passing scores, the Board will grant you certification as a nursing assistant as well as place your name on the Nurse Aide Registry. The certification awarded by the Virginia Board of Nursing will be valid for 2 years.
Renew your Nurse Aide Certification in Virginia
Certification for nurse aides in Virginia is valid for 24 months. In order to be eligible for certification renewal, a nurse aide must have performed 8 hours of paid nursing-related services within the last two-year certification period.

CNAs who fail to provide proof of meeting the eligibility criterium must reinstate their certification, which entails retaking and passing the certification examination.

Out-of-state CNA Certification Transfer
Nurse aides with an active and in good standing certificate in another state may apply for certification by endorsement in Virginia. However, certification by endorsement is available only to candidates requesting initial certification and does not apply to candidates who have been previously certified and listed in the Virginia CNA registry, who must apply for reinstatement.
